Russian drones strike bus and train in southern Ukraine

— Russian drones hit a passenger bus near the front-line city of Nikopol, killing five people and injuring seven, Ukrainian officials said. A separate drone attack struck a passenger train in the Mykolaiv region; all 168 people on board were evacuated and none were reported injured.

The United Nations has recorded a sharp rise in civilian casualties this year. In the first half of 2026 it counted 1,396 civilians killed in Ukraine, a 37 percent increase from the same period in 2025. Ukraine said it intercepted most of a large overnight drone barrage and is testing a new interceptor against faster, jet-powered Shahed drones.
